Freedom of Expression #2 (1993)
"Rush"
Once I completed FOE #2, I realized I made a mistake by using the same 18 page 7" x 4 1/4" layout as #1. Because I didn’t want to repeat myself, I swore to myself that I would never replicate the format of an earlier issue again. "Rush - Detourned" also juxtaposes collaged images with found text that, this time, was drawn from a book about sororities published in the mid-1980s.
The book, Rush: A Girl’s Guide to Sorority Success, is full of unbelievably tasteless stereotypes about sororities that easily cross over the line into the realm of self parody.
Here is an example: "What Sorority Girls Do in Their Spare Time: Watch soap operas ... Shop for clothes ... Bake their boyfriends cookies," and, "What They Don’t Do: Watch the News--It’s too depressing and boring ... Read the newspaper--for the same reason ... Do laundry--it goes to the cleaners."
